Watch Out for Ticks: Our April Walk in Pirita and Kaberneeme

🐾 Watch Out for Ticks: Our April Walk in Pirita and Kaberneeme

This April, my dog and I went for a couple of long walks in Estonia — first through Pirita park, then along the beach in Kaberneeme. The weather was great, the views were beautiful, and everything seemed perfect… until we discovered two ticks on our dog after just those two days.

I’m writing this post as a warning for all dog owners: ticks are already active in Estonia — even in early spring.

We use a Foresto collar as our main form of protection (I wrote more about it in a previous blog post), but it was still alarming to see how quickly ticks became a real threat this year.

⚠️ Ticks Are Active in Estonia

April usually marks the beginning of tick season in Estonia, but 2025 seems particularly early and active. We haven’t yet seen official statements from the Estonian authorities, but judging by online discussions and personal experiences — the risk is real.

If you walk your dog in wooded areas, parks, or grassy places — be extra careful.

🛡️ How to Protect Your Dog

Here are some of the most commonly used tick protection methods in Estonia:

  • Anti-tick collars (like Foresto)
  • Spot-on treatments
  • Tick sprays and shampoos
  • Regular checks after walks — especially behind the ears, neck, legs, and under the tail

If you do find a tick, remove it as soon as possible with tweezers or a special tick remover. If you’re unsure, always consult a veterinarian.

Let this be a reminder to stay safe, protect your furry friends, and enjoy nature responsibly 🐶🌿
